As part of the "Stuttgart–Ulm Railway Project", this approx. 60 km long section consists of a double-track system with around 118 km of track, 60 km of which run through ten tunnels. Six of these tunnels – those exceeding 500 meters in length – are equipped with the illuminated LED handrail "handraiLIT" for safety and orientation lighting.
After commissioning, temporary construction lighting can be removed, as the handrail ensures basic lighting for any outstanding installation work. The handrail is continuously installed between cross passages in each tunnel and uses custom-made deflection units to bypass obstacles such as emergency call stations, fire hydrants, or catenary tensioners.
Integrated into the handrail are lights for emergency signs and the illumination of emergency phone stations including their signage. Flap elements at fire hydrants allow the handrail to be opened for maintenance purposes. The handrail is redundantly powered every 50 meters (in 2 x 25 m segments) by approximately 1,200 emergency power units (not included in scope), ensuring high reliability even in the event of a power failure.
