After the successful completion of work on the mainline, the Kölner Verkehrsbetriebe AG (Cologne transport company) proposed a link of the NorthSouth City Railway (NordSüdStadtbahn) to the existing network in the vicinity of Rheinuferstraße. In addition to being the principal contractor of this construction project for two main sections (D2.02 and D2.03), Rhomberg Bahntechnik GmbH was also awarded the contract for this new section, D2.08. In the track section, the Rheda City slab track system was installed on a 600m double line section between Bonner Wall and Rheinuferstraße. In the existing tunnel and ramp area, rails were placed on duoblock sleepers with a sleeper spacing of 0.75m. In another section, rails were temporarily fastened to steel or wooden sleepers, to be replaced at a later stage. The rails were supported on highly elastic supports supplied by the customer. The concrete logistics was in particular a challenge, because supply was constrained by the small vertical shaft in the tunnel ceiling.
