About the project

As part of the project, the existing single-track section at Lucerne station was expanded to a double-track system. The objective was to introduce a second line alignment for the Zentralbahn (zb), including a new substructure.

Previously, zb trains crossed the station using a single alignment, resulting in longer waiting times during arrivals and departures. With the newly constructed alignment, it is now possible to operate trains in parallel via the new track crossings.

In this context, and due to geometric adjustments in both metre-gauge and standard-gauge areas, all tracks and switches of both lines, including the substructure, were reconstructed.

Scope of works:

  • Civil engineering works on the track substructure
  • Track construction works including gauge conversion and track renewal
  • Modification and dismantling works on track systems, platforms, and other infrastructure elements
  • Adaptation works on several engineering structures and shaft structures
  • Works on overhead line mast foundations
  • Various railway technology measures and interlocking system adaptations

All works were carried out in both standard-gauge and metre-gauge areas.

Special features

The project was characterised by a high level of technical and organisational complexity. This was mainly due to new track and switch alignments, which required geometric adjustments and new designations. At the same time, most of the works were carried out under ongoing rail operations.

A key success factor was the close and precise coordination with all involved specialist departments and external partners. Additional challenges arose from long-term possession planning: since track possessions had to be requested at least three months in advance, already based on the future track and switch designations, early, detailed, and forward-looking planning was essential.
