The tunnel lies on the high-speed line between Mannheim and Stuttgart and was equipped with nearly 2 km of illuminated LED handrail “HandraiLIT” for the mandatory one-year operational trial with Deutsche Bahn. The handrail serves as safety and orientation lighting and also ensures the illumination of emergency signs and emergency telephone pillars.

Power supply is provided via 40 emergency power supply units (NVGs) with integrated batteries, which guarantee independent operation of the safety lighting for at least 3 hours in the event of a power failure – and this reliability is ensured over the entire service life of the system.

As part of the project, the tunnel control center (TÜZ) was also renewed and upgraded to the latest state of the art. From there, the individual handrail sections (each 25 meters) are visualized on a touchscreen and continuously monitored for functionality. In the event of a malfunction, the responsible train dispatcher and plant manager are automatically informed of the failure.
