With a ceremonial groundbreaking, the Rhomberg Sersa Rail Group (RSRG) and distinguished guests celebrated the start of the site expansion in Wels on 27 March 2026.
In addition to RSRG CEO Thomas Bachhofner and Andreas Kiesenhofer, responsible for the Austria and Germany markets within the Group, the event was attended by Regional Councillor for Economic Affairs KommR Markus Achleitner, Mayor Dr. Andreas Rabl, representatives of the City of Wels, ÖBB, the executing construction company, and Rhomberg Sersa’s Wels workforce. The company is investing around €15 million in the expansion project.
Track construction has been carried out in Wels for over 75 years, and railway construction machinery has been maintained on the site for just as long. The new development will expand the existing infrastructure and create a modern working environment. A new building will be constructed on the existing site, providing space for the repair and refurbishment of components, parts manufacturing, and maintenance bays for road-rail excavators. The development will be complemented by a spare parts warehouse, social facilities, and additional office space. Planning and implementation are being carried out by the general contractor GOLDBECK RHOMBERG. Completion of the project is scheduled for autumn 2027.
“Wels is of central strategic importance to our Group, not least due to its geographical location,” emphasised RSRG CEO Thomas Bachhofner. “With this expansion, we are not only responding to our strong growth and strengthening customer support in Austria and southern Germany, but also setting another milestone in further developing and expanding our technological expertise in railway construction. It is a consistent step towards providing our dedicated employees with a modern working environment and enabling close cooperation with railway operators to develop and implement forward-looking solutions.”
Rail construction is a key sector in the transition to sustainable mobility, and with this investment, the Rhomberg Sersa Rail Group is sending a positive signal for the business location of Wels, emphasised Regional Councillor for Economic Affairs KommR Markus Achleitner during the ceremony. The Mayor of Wels, Dr. Andreas Rabl, also highlighted the importance of the investment for the city.
